Yes—but only one specific layer of Windows AI.

As of August 8, 2026, Microsoft’s KB5101684 preview update lets supported Copilot+ PCs remove the Image Generation AI component when that component is installed. Microsoft also separately allows the Copilot app itself to be uninstalled from Windows 11.

That does not mean Windows 11 now has a single “remove all AI” switch. Copilot+ PCs contain several independently serviced AI components, including image-processing, image-transformation and local language-model components. Removing the image-generation model does not remove those other pieces, and uninstalling the Copilot app does not delete the Windows AI platform underneath it.

The practical question is therefore not simply “Can AI be removed?” It is:

Which AI layer is the goal: the Copilot app, a large local model, an AI-powered Windows feature, or cloud-connected AI services?

Those are different things and need different controls.

Feature check — August 8, 2026: The new image-generation removal option is documented in the July 28 KB5101684 preview for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. What changed in the latest Windows 11 preview?

Microsoft’s July 28 preview update, KB5101684, includes a short but significant line under “AI Component”:

This update allows you to remove the Image Generation AI component from supported Copilot+ PCs where the component is installed.

The wording matters.

This is not a general uninstall button for every AI feature in Windows. It is a control for a particular local model/component used for on-device image generation.

Microsoft’s Windows AI developer documentation says the image-generation model is optional, can occupy several gigabytes, and is downloaded on demand when an application first needs it. The same documentation says users can later remove the model from:

Settings > System > AI Components

If an application needs the model again later, Windows can return the model to a “not ready” state and run the download flow again.

So the change is meaningful, especially for storage and feature control, but it is narrower than “Windows lets users uninstall AI.”

The four layers people often call “Windows AI”

The confusion comes from treating several separate systems as if they were one product.

This is the most useful mental model: app, model, operating-system component and cloud service are not interchangeable.

What happens if the Copilot app is uninstalled?

Microsoft’s current support documentation explicitly says the Copilot app can be removed from Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Search for Copilot.
  4. Open the three-dot menu.
  5. Select Uninstall.

That removes the Windows Copilot application.

It does not prevent access to Copilot through a browser, and it does not remove unrelated local AI components used by Windows or other applications.

For someone whose goal is simply “I do not want the Copilot app on my taskbar or Start menu,” this is the relevant control. Removing a multi-gigabyte image model would solve a different problem.

What happens if the Image Generation AI component is removed?

The new option matters most on a Copilot+ PC where the local image-generation model has already been downloaded.

Microsoft’s developer documentation describes that model as an optional on-device component. Applications can use Windows AI APIs to make sure the model is ready before generating images. If it is not installed, the model can be downloaded through Windows Update after the application presents the required consent flow.

After removal:

  • applications relying on the local Windows image-generation model can no longer use it immediately;
  • the model may need to be downloaded again before those features work;
  • removing it can reclaim storage used by the local model;
  • other AI components remain installed;
  • cloud-based Copilot services are unaffected.

This is therefore closer to removing an optional local runtime/model package than uninstalling an entire AI subsystem.

Why does Microsoft call it “Image Generation” in one place and “Image Creation” in another?

Microsoft’s documentation currently uses closely related names for this part of the platform.

KB5101684 calls the removable item the Image Generation AI component. Microsoft’s broader Copilot+ component documentation describes an Image Creation AI component that provides the on-device models and runtime for generating images from text prompts. The Windows App SDK documentation refers to the AI Image Generation model.

For ordinary users, the important distinction is not the label. It is the function: this is the local model package used to generate images on supported hardware.

The naming may also differ slightly between documentation, APIs and the Settings UI as Windows evolves.

Does removing it improve privacy?

Possibly less than expected, depending on the concern.

Microsoft says the Copilot+ image-generation and other Windows AI components are designed to run locally on the device, using the PC’s NPU rather than sending the image-generation workload to the cloud.

Removing a local model can reduce the number of AI capabilities available on the machine, but it does not automatically change the privacy behaviour of:

  • the Copilot web service;
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot;
  • AI features in third-party applications;
  • browser-based AI tools;
  • other local Windows AI components.

If the concern is cloud data sharing, the better question is which apps and services are sending data to remote servers. If the concern is local storage or unwanted functionality, removing the image-generation component is directly relevant.

That distinction prevents a common mistake: deleting an on-device model while leaving the cloud service that caused the original privacy concern untouched.

Does removing it free meaningful storage?

It can.

Microsoft’s Windows App SDK documentation says the optional image-generation model is several gigabytes in size. Microsoft does not give one universal storage number in the documentation because the package and hardware path can vary.

That makes this one of the more practical reasons to use the new control.

A Copilot+ PC with limited SSD space may have no reason to keep a large local image model installed if no application uses it. Removing the component can be treated like removing an optional capability: reclaim the space now and download it again later if needed.

Can Windows reinstall the model later?

Yes, if software requests it and the user goes through the required setup flow.

Microsoft’s image-generation API documentation says applications should check whether the model is ready. If it has been removed, the app can encounter a NotReady or EnsureNeeded state and repeat the consent-and-download process.

This means removal is reversible, but it is not the same as creating a permanent policy that forbids the model from ever being downloaded again.

For a shared, managed or enterprise PC where administrators need a hard policy rather than a user-level uninstall, the appropriate Windows management controls should be evaluated separately.

Why might the option not appear yet?

There are several legitimate reasons.

1. The PC is not a Copilot+ PC

The AI-component removal described by KB5101684 is for supported Copilot+ hardware. A conventional Windows 11 PC may have the Copilot app but not the same local component stack.

2. The model was never installed

Microsoft says the image-generation model is optional and can be downloaded on demand. If it is not present, there may be nothing to remove.

3. KB5101684 is not installed

The July 28 release is a preview update for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. Microsoft currently exposes it through Windows Update’s optional-updates path.

4. The feature has not reached the device yet

Microsoft says KB5101684 contains both gradual-rollout and normal-rollout changes. Features in the gradual phase arrive on eligible devices over time, so two otherwise similar PCs can temporarily show different options.

This is why “I do not see the button” is not evidence that the documentation is wrong—or that the feature is available everywhere already.

A better checklist than “remove all AI”

Before changing anything, identify the actual goal.

Goal: remove the Copilot chat app

Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Copilot > Uninstall.

Goal: reclaim storage from a local image model

On an eligible Copilot+ PC with the relevant update, check Settings > System > AI Components and remove the image-generation component if it is installed and not needed.

Goal: stop one Windows AI feature

Look for that feature’s own Settings control or administrator policy. Removing Copilot does not automatically disable every AI-powered Windows experience.

Goal: reduce cloud AI data exposure

Review the privacy and account controls of the actual cloud service being used. Deleting a local model is not a substitute for changing a cloud service’s data settings.

Goal: make Windows completely “AI-free”

Microsoft does not currently document a single supported control that removes every AI-related capability from Windows 11. The platform is increasingly componentised, so the realistic approach is to identify and manage individual apps, models and features.

The useful part of this change is control, not ideology

The new removal option is interesting because it treats at least one large AI model as something users can install when needed and remove when not needed.

That is a better model for optional local AI than assuming every supported PC must permanently keep every model on disk.

It also suggests a useful direction for future Windows AI controls: make individual models and capabilities visible, explain which apps depend on them, show their storage use, and let users remove or reinstall them without breaking unrelated features.

For now, however, the scope is narrow.

Windows 11 can remove the local image-generation component on supported Copilot+ PCs. It can also uninstall the Copilot app. Neither action removes every AI capability from Windows.

What to watch next

Three things will determine whether this becomes a broader shift rather than a one-off storage control:

  1. Whether Microsoft exposes removal controls for more local AI components. Copilot+ PCs currently contain several independently serviced AI packages.
  2. Whether Windows shows clearer dependency information. Users need to know which features stop working before removing a component.
  3. Whether optional AI models become genuinely on-demand by default. Microsoft already documents the image-generation model this way; extending that pattern would reduce unnecessary storage use.

The immediate next step is simple: update the PC, check whether the relevant model is installed, and remove only the layer that matches the actual goal.
