A USB fingerprint reader can be a convenient way to add Windows Hello to a desktop, docked laptop, or PC whose built-in sensor is awkward to reach. The catch has been security: on many Windows 11 systems, using an external biometric device meant turning off Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS).
That is now changing for fingerprint readers. Microsoft is rolling out ESS support for compatible peripheral fingerprint sensors on Windows 11, including desktops and Copilot+ PCs.
The important buying lesson is less obvious: “Windows Hello compatible” does not automatically mean “ESS compatible.” Some external readers support the stronger ESS path; others still require ESS to be disabled before Windows Hello will use them.
Feature check — August 12, 2026: Microsoft’s current support documentation says ESS-capable external fingerprint readers are supported on Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer, but the capability is rolling out in phases. The quick answer
If an external fingerprint reader explicitly supports Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security, Windows 11 can now let that reader participate in the ESS-protected sign-in path.
If it supports ordinary Windows Hello but not ESS, Microsoft says it can still work — but you may have to turn ESS off first.
That distinction matters because disabling ESS is not just flipping a convenience setting. Microsoft warns that doing so removes existing ESS enrollments and associated credentials, including passkeys tied to that ESS setup. Those credentials can be provisioned again later, but the change should be treated as a security decision rather than a harmless compatibility switch.
External Windows Hello cameras are also different from fingerprint readers: Microsoft’s current support page says ESS is not supported for external camera modules.
Why ESS matters
Windows Hello already avoids sending a reusable password every time you sign in. ESS adds another layer around biometric sign-in.
Microsoft describes Enhanced Sign-in Security as a protected sign-in path that uses specialized hardware and software components such as Virtualization Based Security (VBS) and Trusted Platform Module 2.0. The goal is to protect biometric information and the sign-in process from the sensor through to the part of Windows that handles the credential.
That tightly controlled path is also why external accessories have historically been awkward. A random USB camera or fingerprint reader introduces hardware outside the built-in trust chain.
Microsoft’s new peripheral-fingerprint support does not remove that requirement. It extends ESS to readers designed to participate in it.
The compatibility matrix that matters

The key shopping mistake is assuming the words “Windows Hello compatible” answer both columns. They do not.
Microsoft explicitly says some external fingerprint readers carrying that description support ESS and some do not.
Before buying a USB fingerprint reader, ask one extra question
Do not stop at:
Does this work with Windows Hello?
Ask:
Does this reader support Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS) on Windows 11 24H2 or newer?
If the product page, manufacturer documentation, or support team cannot answer that clearly, treat ESS support as unconfirmed.
A useful purchase checklist is:
- Windows 11 support: confirm the reader supports the Windows version you use.
- Windows Hello support: confirm it can enroll for fingerprint sign-in rather than functioning only as a generic scanner.
- ESS support: look for an explicit statement about Enhanced Sign-in Security, not just Windows Hello.
- Driver requirements: check whether the manufacturer still maintains the driver for current Windows 11 releases.
- Managed-PC restrictions: if the PC belongs to an employer or school, check policy before buying hardware; administrators can restrict non-ESS peripherals or hide the relevant settings.
That fifth point matters because a compatible reader is not enough if organization policy blocks enrollment.
How to check whether the new support has reached your PC
1. Confirm the Windows version
Press Win + R, type:
winver
Microsoft’s current guidance for the newer ESS controls applies to Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer.
If the PC is on an older release, update the operating system before diagnosing the fingerprint reader itself.
2. Install current Windows updates
Open:
Settings → Windows Update
Install the current security and quality updates, then restart if required.
The peripheral-ESS capability was documented in Microsoft’s July 28, 2026 preview update for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 and is rolling out in phases, so two otherwise similar PCs may not expose it at exactly the same time.
3. Connect the fingerprint reader
Install any manufacturer-provided driver if the vendor requires one, then go to:
Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options
Under Additional settings, look for Enhanced sign-in security.
Microsoft says an ESS-capable reader can be enrolled while ESS remains enabled.
4. Pay attention to what Windows asks you to disable
If the reader is not ESS-compatible, Windows may require ESS to be turned off before enrollment.
That is the decision point.
Do not disable ESS automatically just because an accessory will not enroll. First decide whether the convenience of that reader is worth weakening the protected biometric path on that PC.
What happens if you disable ESS for an older reader?
Microsoft’s current instructions contain an easy-to-miss warning: when ESS is disabled, existing ESS enrollments and associated credentials such as passkeys are removed.
They can be provisioned again later, but that means switching ESS off can affect more than the fingerprint sensor you are trying to add.
Before doing it, check:
- which Windows Hello methods are already enrolled;
- whether passkeys on the device depend on the current ESS setup;
- whether another sign-in route such as a PIN is working;
- whether the PC is managed by an organization;
- whether replacing the reader with an ESS-compatible model is the simpler option.
For a personal desktop with no existing ESS setup, the tradeoff may be small. On a newer laptop or Copilot+ PC already using ESS-protected credentials, it can be much more disruptive.
Why external cameras are still different
The new rollout is specifically important because fingerprint readers and cameras are no longer in the same bucket.
Microsoft says Enhanced Sign-in Security now supports qualifying peripheral fingerprint sensors, but its support documentation still says external camera modules do not support ESS.
So a desktop owner deciding between two ways to add Windows Hello has a meaningful choice:
- an ESS-capable external fingerprint reader can preserve ESS;
- an external Windows Hello camera currently cannot use the ESS path for sign-in.
That does not make external cameras insecure in every context. It means they do not participate in this particular enhanced Windows Hello security architecture.
They can also continue to work normally for video calls and other apps even while ESS is enabled; the restriction is about using the external camera for Windows Hello sign-in.
Why the rollout may look confusing
Microsoft first documented peripheral ESS fingerprint support in a January 2026 preview update, then updated that documentation in April to say the feature had been removed from that release and was planned for a future one.
The July 28 KB5101684 preview for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 now says the feature is beginning to roll out.
That history explains why older articles, forum posts, product reviews, and even screenshots may appear to contradict each other.
A guide written in February can truthfully show one behavior, while a fully updated PC in August can show another.
When troubleshooting, prefer the current Microsoft support page and the current build on the PC over an old setup video.
A simple decision framework
Buy an ESS-capable external fingerprint reader if…
- the PC sits on a desk or dock where the built-in fingerprint sensor is inconvenient;
- you want biometric sign-in without disabling ESS;
- the vendor explicitly confirms ESS support;
- current Windows 11 drivers are available.
Keep using the built-in sensor if…
- it already works reliably;
- the external reader you are considering lists only generic Windows Hello support;
- the convenience gain is small;
- disabling ESS would remove credentials you already depend on.
Consider an ordinary non-ESS reader only if…
- the machine does not currently rely on ESS-protected enrollments;
- you understand the tradeoff;
- the accessory solves a real accessibility or desk-layout problem;
- an ESS-capable alternative is unavailable or impractical.
A five-minute setup check
Before returning a reader as “broken,” run this sequence:
winver→ confirm Windows 11 24H2 or newer.- Windows Update → install current updates and restart.
- Device Manager → confirm the reader is detected without an error.
- Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options.
- Check the Enhanced sign-in security state.
- Try enrolling the reader.
- If Windows requires ESS to be disabled, stop and verify whether the reader is actually ESS-capable before changing the setting.
That last step separates a driver problem from a security-compatibility problem.
What to watch next
Three things will make this feature easier to use over time:
- Clearer hardware labeling. “Windows Hello compatible” is too broad now that ESS compatibility creates a meaningful difference.
- More ESS-capable peripherals. The feature is only useful if accessory makers ship and document supported hardware.
- Wider rollout. Microsoft says availability is phased, so the setting may continue appearing on additional supported devices through normal Windows updates.
Until product listings catch up, buyers should treat ESS support as a separate specification that needs to be verified.
Conclusion
Windows 11’s new support for ESS-capable external fingerprint readers fixes a real desktop and docking problem: users can add a convenient biometric sensor without automatically giving up Enhanced Sign-in Security.
But the new feature also makes an old label less useful. “Windows Hello compatible” alone is no longer enough information.
Before buying an external fingerprint reader, verify that the manufacturer explicitly supports Enhanced Sign-in Security on Windows 11. If it does not, the reader may still work — but only after a security tradeoff that can remove existing ESS credentials and passkeys.
